IHC has long considered itself “A Hospital without Walls”—a means of linking physicians, surgeons, and nurses around the world to heal critically ill children.
Recently, this phrase acquired an even deeper meaning.

A few months ago a generous contribution from Millenium Bank in the Caribbean allowed IHC to purchase a telemedicine system in St. Vincent, a revolutionary means of connecting physicians in two locations to deliver state-of-the-art medical care. Telemedicine uses high-definition video cameras and conferencing technology to transmit images with extraordinary clarity. It opens numerous doors for IHC to provide physician and nurse training, patient evaluation, physician consultations, and post-op follow up care in this tiny island nation with so much need for pediatric critical care.
Last week, we brought telemedicine to its full potential when two Richmond pediatric general surgeons, Dr. David Lanning and Dr. Frank Margaron, led a surgery in St. Vincent from IHC headquarters. The patient was a six-day-old baby, born with an intestinal abnormality. Without surgical intervention, she was sure to die. Knowing this tiny baby had no other recourse, St. Vincent’s general surgeon agreed to attempt the operation with IHC’s volunteer pediatric surgeons on the other end through the entire two and a half hour procedure.
The ability to use telemedicine in a surgical capacity gives a chance to so many precious children in St. Vincent who can’t be reached by our visiting teams in time. With telemedicine in place, we never really leave the countries or the children we help. What an incredible opportunity.
