IHC Recently Rated by Charity Navigator

October 5, 2009

Charity Navigator Logo

Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities, has added IHC to its website. Last year alone, more than four million donors used the site that TIME Magazine called “One of America’s 50 Coolest Websites for 2006.”

Charity Navigator ranks nonprofits by examining two areas of a charity’s financial health — how responsibly it functions day to day as well as how well positioned it is to sustain its programs over time. Each charity is then awarded an overall rating, ranging from zero to four stars. IHC received three stars, which according to the site, means that IHC “Exceeds or meets industry standards and performs as well as or better than most charities in its Cause.”

IHC’s Latest Miracle

June 15, 2009

Our latest miracle, Joshua, was recently included in a USA Today article.  When Joshua arrived in Richmond a month ago, weighing only 4 lbs at one month of age, he was barely holding on to life.  Born with a condition known as esophageal atresia (incomplete esophagus), Joshua could not receive the nutrition needed to grow his infant body.  Joshua’s mother, Yesenia, held onto hope that IHC would be able to save her only child.

After being given IV nutrition for several weeks so he could gain weight before surgery, Joshua’s esophagus was repaired by IHC volunteer pediatric surgeon Dr. David Lanning. What seemed impossible just months ago is now a striking reality: Joshua is not only gaining weight but is learning to take a bottle by mouth. Joshua was recently discharged and has gone home with wonderful prospects for a full and healthy life with his family in Belize.

On behalf of Joshua and Yesenia-thank you! Without the generosity of our pediatric specialists, and you, our financial contributors, care for Joshua would not have been possible.

Through your support,  four more children will receive surgery this month. These are children like  Kyra from St. Lucia  who arrived last week for open heart surgery.
